SIBU: The Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism here had acted on 20 cases involving various offences from January till May.Goods worth RM126,498 were confiscated in connection with these cases, Sibu branch chief Balraj Singh stated yesterday, thanking the public for their tip-off.
“We have taken stern action against 12 cases under the Price Control Act 1946,” Balraj told reporters.
Giving the breakdown of the statistics, he disclosed that four cases were for flouting the Control of Supplies Act 1961, two cases for contravention of Trade Description Act 1972, and two for non-compliance with the Consumer Protection Act 1999.
He warned traders not to exploit the coming Gawai Dayak celebration to hike prices of goods indiscriminately.
“We will not hesitate to come down hard on them if they manipulate the prices of goods to jack up their profits,” he cautioned.
On the other hand, he urged consumers to compare prices of goods and buy only necessary items.
Balraj assured the public that their complaints would be speedily attended .
